So is it all a load of BS?

And do clients or job seekers really care?

I’ve decided to attempt to follow on from my blog last week that was concerning the complete unwillingness of recruitment lead firms to engage in social media. It somewhat divided opinion via the various resources (Blog, LinkedIn, Twitter) on whether I was right or wrong…oh, how I love to divide opinion!

There are of course the firm believers that are adamant that recurimetn as a service lead business will continue to survive in one form or another and there are recruitment 2.0 experts who feel that without social media the whole (recruitment) world will collapse and of course, those in the middle.

But, it did get me thinking. Maybe we need to all stop worrying about how we find the candidates/job seekers/future employees and instead focus on developing the most efficient, time effective, cost sensitive solution around, by creating a platform that allows in-house, online and agency to work in harmony.

If candidates come from referral (to an agency) does it matter to the employer? Does it matter that this person was targeted for the role over an active job seeker who registered on a CV database? Does it actually matter that by utilising Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn you find the right person for the role or should it solely be about the quality, suitability and individual fit of the person within the organisation.

So what comes first the method or the outcome?

Sorry I haven’t got the time for a more expansive response, but in answer to your ultimate question, only the outcome is important. All roads lead to Rome, it’s just that the infrastructure has been amended and extended!

  2. Lets got get fluffy about this, and Jack is on the right lines here. Ultimately the hire counts…in the short term anyway.

For any of recruiters that don’t believe social isn’t going to play a part in the recruitment world, need to take their heads out of the sand.
Is it going to be the only solution? of course not.
Will it become more intrinsically linked to recruitment strategies? 100% YES.

For any that don’t know, the recruitment demographic is changing fast. by 2015 the gen Y’ers will be the largest part of the workforce.
And guess what, there are not enough to go round. Talent shortage means we are back to employee led markets and having to engage candidates again.
Damn – that may mean you are going to have to some proper recruitment and start working hard to get the candidates.

And what do most of them surgically attached to their hands? iPhones, Blackberry’s and Androids. What are they on? It certainly isn’t job boards or career sites.
They are doing something social with their friends and mates etc [Please note I am not talking mobile recruitment here!!]

Social won’t be the magic answer for recruiters, but if they are going to get the best candidates, they will have to engage with them and [importantly] do that in the space where the candidates feel most comfortable – and that will increasingly be social.

I haven’t mentioned specific platforms because (to a certain degree) that is irrelevent – candidates are all in different places online, so one site doesn’t fit all.
But then again that is obvious isn’t it? Of course, as a good recruiter you will already be active in all the spaces your candidates are, right?

The thing is I KNOW the answer to my last point. That is why my prediction is that many recruitment companies will simply disappear over the next five years!

I hear property is picking up……….
